What is the best business in town doing?

Everybody wants to know what the best shop in town is doing. Almost nobody asks.

Hi y’all,

Every owner I talk to asks some version of the same questions: What’s my competition doing? What’s that best business in town doing that I’m not? How do I define my edge over my competition?

And most of us answer by peering in from the outside. You scroll their Instagram. A venue coordinator mentions something in passing. Somebody tells you what they heard they charge.

The good news is most owners will just tell you — you just have to be in a room where that happens. That’s a big reason we do the User Summit, and this year’s is September 16.

Watch my take on what actually makes the day worth it:

Three things I’d point you at:

Operators talking to operators. The sessions people remember from past Summits are the panels and breakouts — owners saying out loud what they charge, what they stopped doing, what broke last season. It’s the same reason peer groups are the most-used member benefit at most industry associations.

Specialists who already know this industry. We’ve got partners speaking this year on the things that quietly decide your year but sit outside your software: your marketing, your books, how your website is actually built. They work with event companies too, so you’re not spending the first twenty minutes explaining what a rental business is.

Half the value is finding out you were right. We’ve had that lesson recently with consultants. You go in braced to hear what you’re doing wrong, only to hear that you already know what you’re doing. There isn’t always somebody who knows your business better than you do, and confirming that is worth as much as being corrected.

It’s one day and it’s virtual, with separate tracks for new users starting out, scaling businesses reaching the next level, and established businesses that want to sustain growth. So we’ve got tailored tracks for each stage of business, focused on the content you need right now.
