Are you keeping your employees & clients safe in the summer heat?
Hi y’all,
Welcome back to Busy Season, your guide to the hot takes, pro tips, and real stories sweeping the events industry.
Here in DC, we’re facing temperatures in the 90s every day, and 2024 is well on its way to being the hottest summer on record. So let’s talk about how to beat this heat.
Let’s face it: the backbone of your operation is your warehouse workers, drivers, and set-up crew. And with many places in the US tracking 3-6 degrees hotter than normal, it’s important to keep them comfortable and safe.
Here are some solutions I’ve seen help in this weather:
🚚 Schedule early morning or late evening load ins and load outs, if your crew is willing to work different hours to beat the heat.
💧 Keep your crew hydrated. Give them company water bottles and send them out on the truck with beverage coolers with lots of ice.
🪭 Make sure your warehouse is well-ventilated. My family’s business installed these fans, which have been a lifesaver for the guys.
👕 Change team uniforms to lighter colors or consider moisture-wicking shirts. Black tees are sleek and great for hiding dirt, but they’re also really hot in the sun.
Your employees aren’t the only ones feeling the heat. Clients might not know how to host outdoor events in this weather. You can help them out by recommending cooling stations, shade, water plans, maximum event capacities, and first-aid tents.
And even with all that, you should have a weather backup plan. This heat is no joke. Stay cool out there, y’all.
See you next Tuesday,
Mallory Mullen
